Lips
Keep your lips relaxed and only slightly spread. No smile, no tension. The mouth is nearly closed, a little more open than for "ee".
The vowel in "kit". A short, relaxed "i", not a tight "ee".
Example words: kit, bid, hymn, sit, fish

Keep your lips relaxed and only slightly spread. No smile, no tension. The mouth is nearly closed, a little more open than for "ee".
Tongue high and toward the front, but loose. Let it drop just a touch from the "ee" position. Tip rests behind your lower teeth.
Very short. Clip it. This is the lax partner of long "ee": "ship" is quick and relaxed, "sheep" is long and tense.
Record yourself saying "ship, sheep, ship, sheep". Play it back. If the two words sound identical, your "ship" is too long and tense. Keep the first one short and relaxed.
The classic trap is replacing it with "ee", so "ship" becomes "sheep" and "sit" becomes "seat". The difference isn't just length. It's tension: if your lips or tongue feel tight, you've drifted into the wrong vowel.
