Privacy Policy for Accenty
Accenty ("we", "us", or "the app") is an AI English pronunciation coach. This policy explains what data the app handles and why. By using Accenty you agree to this policy.
1. The short version
- You can use Accenty without an account. The app identifies your install with a random anonymous ID, not your name or email.
- When you practice, the app sends your recording to our processing service to generate pronunciation feedback. We do not keep your voice recordings or transcripts after they are analyzed.
- We keep your practice results (such as scores and the sounds to work on) and how you use the app's features, linked to your anonymous ID, to improve Accenty. We do not use them for advertising and do not track you across other apps or websites.
2. What we collect and why
Audio recordings. When you tap record and read a sentence, the app captures your microphone audio and sends it to our backend, which forwards it to a third-party AI provider (Google Gemini) to analyze your pronunciation and return feedback. The audio is used only to produce that feedback and is not stored on our servers after processing.
Practice results. After an analysis we store the result, not the audio: for example your overall score, the accent mix the analysis detected, the sounds to work on, how long the practice took, and whether it was part of onboarding or a practice session. These are stored in Google Firebase with your anonymous ID, your app version, device type and operating system version, your app and device language, and the App Store or Google Play country. We use them to understand how people learn with Accenty and to improve the feedback.
App usage. We use Google Firebase Analytics to record which features you open and use (for example the screens you visit, the practice you start, and the subscription screen you see), together with your anonymous ID. We use Firebase Crashlytics to receive crash reports, which include device and app details.
Anonymous ID. On first launch the app signs in anonymously with Firebase Authentication, which creates a random ID for your install. It is used to keep your subscription status, practice results and usage data together.
Optional account. If you choose to create an account (email, Google or Apple sign-in) to sync across devices, we store your email address and link it to your existing anonymous ID. Your study progress is then stored in Firebase so it can sync between your devices.
Subscriptions. Purchases are processed by Apple or Google. We receive and store the purchase and renewal status needed to unlock Pro features. We never see your payment card details.
My Sentence. If you use My Sentence, the short text you type (up to 160 characters) is sent through our backend to Google Gemini to write an English version for you to practise. We do not store that text on our servers.
Usage counters. To keep the service available, our backend counts how many AI requests each anonymous ID makes per day. These counters are set to expire after 30 days.
On-device voice and pronunciation models. Some features download a voice model and a phoneme model from Hugging Face (huggingface.co) once, then run them on your device. Your audio is not sent anywhere for these features.
Speech recognition. The live "Sound Check" practice room uses your device's built-in speech recognition to show how your words are heard. On some devices this feature may transmit audio to the platform provider (Apple or Google) under their own privacy policies. We store only the number of words recognized, not what you said.
On-device data. Your practice history and app settings (such as your chosen accent and app language) are also stored locally on your device. Deleting the app removes the local copy.
We do NOT collect: your name, contacts, precise location, photos, or advertising identifiers. Accenty contains no advertising SDKs.
3. How your data is protected
Data is transmitted over encrypted connections (HTTPS). Practice results and usage data can only be written by the app for your own anonymous ID and cannot be read back by anyone through the app.
4. Third parties
- Google Firebase (Authentication, Firestore, Analytics, Crashlytics, Cloud Functions) and Google Gemini store and process the data described above. See Google's privacy policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy
- Apple / Google process purchases and, for Sound Check, device speech recognition, under their own policies.
We do not sell or rent your data to anyone.
5. Data retention and deletion
We keep practice results and usage data for as long as they are useful to improve Accenty. To have your data deleted, contact us at the address below. If you use an account, include its email address so we can find your data.
6. Children's privacy
Accenty is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
7. Your choices
- You can deny or revoke microphone permission in your device settings. Without the microphone, recording-based features will not work, but the rest of the app (such as the pronunciation reference) remains usable.
- You can use the app without creating an account.
- Deleting the app removes locally stored practice history and settings.
8. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the "Last updated" date above.
